i need your secret of how to come up with fast but cool looking backgroundss

I wish I had one, but the real secret is that I waste so much time messing around with my backgrounds, only to realize I should have started out with something simple to begin with. I use a lot of gradients and layer masks on different shapes though. You'd be amazed at how different something can feel with the slightest tweak.
